Cape May MAC (Museums+Arts+Culture), formerly Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities, was founded in 1970. It has transformed this quiet coastal town into a vibrant cultural destination.

Guests are welcomed at the adorable structure on Washington Square Mall by friendly Visitor Service Associates ready to tell visitors about the town’s tours and activities. Visitors can also purchase tickets for trolley, historic house and walking tours.

The Physick House Museum

Learn about the history of Cape May’s only Victorian house museum on this entertaining guided tour. Designed by Frank Furness, it is considered one of the best examples of Stick Style architecture.

Tours focus on the home’s history and its furnishings, such as ornate wallpaper and richly patterned rugs, plus the home’s many taxidermied creations. Visitors can also see how electricity replaced gas lamps.

Hear actual spirit voices captured by staff in the 1879 Physick Estate on the Voices from Beyond Tour. The Carriage House also carries a wide selection of local subjects via Arcadia Publishing.

The Cape May Lighthouse

The lighthouse is a landmark for visitors and residents alike, and also serves as a vital aid to navigation. The 157-foot structure stands on the south tip of the Cape May peninsula, where the Atlantic Ocean meets Delaware Bay.

The current tower was built in 1859 and succeeded two previous lighthouses lost to erosion. Guests who climb its 199 steps are rewarded with a spectacular view of the surrounding Cape May Point State Park Natural Area, which contains many pond, coastal dune and marsh habitats that support northern and southern species of flora and fauna.

Outdoor Festivals

Throughout the year, Cape May MAC (Museums+Arts+Culture) hosts fun outdoor events. From the annual Lima Bean Festival in West Cape May to a Bavarian Beer Garden, you’ll find plenty of ways to relax and enjoy the outdoors!

The Carroll Gallery in the Carriage House mounts unique exhibits that delve into local, Victorian and African American history. Founded in 1970, Cape May MAC operates the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate as a Victorian house museum with a Carroll Gallery and museum shop.
