Along the Delaware Bay, which forms the township's western
boundary, fishing, crabbing and boating are activities visitors can enjoy every
day during the summer. The Dennis Township Recreational Park, a
favorite spot in South Dennis, boasts a playground, basketball and volleyball
courts, soccer and baseball fields, as well as areas for roller skating and
tennis. Open daily this recreational tract is the perfect complement to
Dennis Township's bucolic, family-oriented character.
Dennis Township covers sixty five square miles and was
created in 1826 out of territory from the southern half of Upper Township. The
Township formally organized its government in March 1827.
Dennis Creek was the first town in the county to have its
own post office, which opened in 1802, and was the main port for Cape May County
for coastal shipping. From 1848 to 1901 at least fifty-six ships were built at
Dennis Creek.
